Paper Hearts: The Puppet Show

HAD Project – January 23rd and 24th 2010

Opening Performances

For the opening weekend of the HAD project in Sheung Wan, Hong Kong, Hoi Chiu and Maggie Blue O'Hara, Co-Artistic Directors of All Theatre Art Association, will create an original puppet show called Paper Hearts. Following these performances, an exhibition of Paper Hearts: The Puppet Show will be available for the public to view over the entire period of the HAD Jan. 23- March 2010.

Paper Hearts Puppet Show Synopsis
Paper Hearts is a touching story about a local (Hong Kong) Chinese woman in her sixties, who has been a paper collector all of her life. She lives simply in a small, run-down apartment on the corner of Staunton and Aberdeen Road. On one of her typical days flattening cardboard boxes and pushing her paper cart up the steep hills of Sheung Wan, she finds an abandoned baby in the garbage.
She takes the baby home and becomes his mother.
Paper Hearts takes the audience on a journey, observing the lonely woman who now has a young child to care for. They have many lovely times together: eating fresh warm egg tarts, lighting incense and burning paper during Yulan. She shows him how to cut paper hearts with scissors; he helps her collect paper on her route.
But the boy grows up quickly and is soon embarrassed by his mother's way of life. He becomes a highly paid architect and tries to force his mother to quit her paper collecting. He doesn't appreciate how hard she has worked her whole life and how much she has helped him become the man he is today.

One day, while working at his office with many overdue projects on his desk, he ignores a phone call from his mother. When he finally visits her she is in the hospital. Later they have one final dreamy day together at the old park where she used to take him. All around them is construction and new buildings going up; the city is noisy and distracting. Yet she makes another row of paper hearts with her scissors and gives it to him. Time slows down and the noise dissolves. He remembers when he was a child and how she would push him on the swings and how that simple action made them both so happy. He finally thanks his mother for everything she has done for him. They hold hands and walk home.

Director's Notes
Paper Hearts is a metaphor for the conflict between old and new Hong Kong, which sees progress in tearing down the old and building the new. Paper Hearts is about how Hong Kong culture is precious – how the memories, architecture, old streets and old people have so many stories to share, with wisdom and knowledge, from which we can learn.
In the end, Paper Hearts is about appreciating the past, learning to understand each other and trying to work together in harmony. Every element of the show will be made out of paper and wood. Paper comes from trees, an invaluable part of nature only recently being viewed as important again as they become endangered. Paper holds knowledge, memories and personal stories we need to remember in order to appreciate where we've come from and therefore have faith in the path of our future.

The King plays his saxophone hoping the prince will one day be ready to rule the Kingdom of Time. The Queen sings opera keeping a close watch on her son. But their teenage son wants no part in the family’s business. He just wants to party and rock n’ roll! Meanwhile, Maids 3, 6 and 9 try to sabotage and rule the kingdom themselves by stealing the King’s telescope of power! They put Maid 12, a storyteller who is faithful to the King, in prison. This makes the balance of nature tip over to the dark side and the prince has to learn to follow his heart in order to bring back the light…

Created and performed by local and Canadian artists, The Hands of Time is an epic, family fun adventure fusing mask and huge puppet, drama and comedy, shadow and light. It will sure to delight both parents and children!

時間之國的國王希望在法力消失前將控制時間的重任交付王子，可惜王子耽於玩樂，不懂珍惜，亦不明白家庭責任；咄咄逼人的皇后又惹王子反感，時間之國頓時面臨後繼無人的危機。此時，掌管夢的宮女三、沉迷享樂的宮女六和工作成狂的宮女九趁機謀反，爭奪掌控時間的力量，還將忠於國王的宮女十二關在天牢。
王子逃避內心愧疚，獨自躲進黑暗洞穴；從此世界逆轉，四季反常……

加拿大、香港兩地藝術家攜手炮製的原創多媒體木偶劇《時間之手》，結合面具、大型木偶與影偶等表演元素，透過充滿神話色彩的演繹，帶領觀眾穿越時間之國的黑暗時期，感受克服生命逆境的勇氣。

40-school tour (25,000 students) musical mask theatre show commissioned by the HK Arts Festival’s Young Friends Program.

Urban Dance Festival :
Commissioned by SWIRE and HK Youth Arts Foundation, Maggie Blue and Hoi Chiu choreographed site-specific dance pieces.

Mask 44 :
Performance with 44 hand-made masks (Hoi Chiu) and vocals (Maggie Blue). HK Fringe Club.

The Far Away Tree :
A children’s musical puppet show about the importance of trees and our connection to nature, commissioned for Kadoorie Farm and Botanical Gardens’ 50th Anniversary. Performed 80 times throughout the year for groups of school children visiting the farm.

YuYu MiMi – A Love Story :
The company’s first major original puppet theatre collaboration had its world premiere at the International Puppet Festival in Birmingham, England.

In March 2008, the Hoi Chiu Art Gallery opened in the Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre (JCCAC) in Kowloon.The Gallery actively promotes mask and puppet art in Hong Kong with several successful workshops having been held, including <> for the Hong Kong International Arts Carnival 2008 (Leisure and Culture Services Department), and the <> sponsored by Hong Kong Arts Development Council. Hoi Chiu has been invited by many schools to demonstrate and teach the basic production and performance techniques of mask and puppetry.

The Hoi Chiu Art Gallery takes part in various performances, such as the Community Festival at JCCAC and the JCCAC Standard Chartered Arts in the Park – Mardi Gras 2008. For the Mardi Gras, Hoi Chiu created an eye-catching 14-foot-tall puppet that became the focus of the event.
The Gallery puts much effort into the promotion of performing arts.

Since August 2008, free performances – called <> – have been offered on the last Friday night of each month to provide both a platform for youth who are interested in performing and a chance for the general public to learn more about these art forms. A variety of performances are offered, such as mask, mime, drama, music, and video. The shows involve not only the Hoi Chiu Art Gallery staff, but also other JCCAC artists.

木人行

由本地藝術家海潮在2008年3月，進駐石硤尾賽馬會創意藝術中心之後成立，全名為 “木人行 – 海潮工房面具木偶美術館” 。

< 木人行> 積極推動本地的面具及木偶藝術，在成立短短的日子內已舉行多個工作坊，當中包括與 “康樂及文化事務署 – 國際綜藝合家歡2008” 合作的 <夢世界>工作坊，以及由 “香港藝術發展局” 資助的 <白日夢>工作坊。除此之外，<木人行> 亦有獲學校邀請，到多間學校示範及教授面具、木偶和皮影的基本製作及演出技巧。

至於演出方面，<木人行> 曾擔任由石硤尾賽馬會創意藝術中心舉行的 “社區藝術節” 及 “渣打藝趣嘉年華” 的表演團體，其中在 “嘉年華”，<木人行> 製作了一隻超過 14呎高的巨型大木偶，成為全場焦點。

另外，<木人行> 在推動表演藝術上也是不遺餘力，從08年8月開始，在每月的最後一個星期五晚上舉行一場名為 <木人月事> 的免費表演，節目包括面具、默劇、話劇、音樂演奏、短片播放等等．．．亦曾有藝術中心內的其他藝術家參與其中，主要目的是開放一個平台，令更多有興趣表演的年青人有機會演出，並讓更多市民有多一個途徑欣賞表演藝術，享受當中的樂趣。

Hoi Chiu 海潮

Hoi Chiu has led a colourful artistic life as a puppeteer, actor, dancer, director and illustrator. From formal ritual theatre to the community-based Playback Theatre, Hoi Chiu has explored a wide spectrum of performance possibilities and is the founder of the Hong Kong Puppet Centre and The Hoi Chiu Art Gallery, which opened in 2008 at The J.C.C.A.C. His collaboration with Prince Wong on Yulan (Chinese Ghost Festival) produced four performances ranging from the sensational and provocative to the spiritual and meditative.
Hoi Chiu created TRA-P-ART, a theatre piece about cruelty and love among cold-blooded instinctive insects, as part of the On & On Theatre Series in Hong Kong as well as The Macau Fringe Festival. In spring 2004, Hoi Chiu and Maggie Blue O’Hara created All Theatre Company (All Theatre Art Association), an international, multimedia performance troupe. In 2005, they premiered YuYu MiMi – A Love Story at The International Puppet Festival in Birmingham, England. At the 2005 Macau Fringe Festival, they presented the puppet show Shambhala Warrior and the dance theatre duet Unity Consciousness Theory.

In February 2007, Hoi Chiu was a guest artist, representing Hong Kong, at the Spotlight Festival, an Arts Conference, in Singapore and performed an excerpt of YuYu MiMi, which had its Asian premiere as a Chinese multimedia production at The 35th Hong Kong Arts Festival in March. Life, Love and Death- a dance, mask theatre duet was performed at HKAF’s 2007 Summer Showcase. Hoi Chiu’s original story, King of Time, was performed in collaboration with The Hong Kong Arts Festival as part of a 40-school tour (over 25,000 students), promoting professional theatre and their Young Friends Program. YuYu MiMi performed at The Shanghai Dramatic Art Centre in November 2007 and in Guangzhou, China in February 2008. Hoi Chiu was commissioned as a guest choreographer in The Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation’s Urban Dance Festival. Brought to Thailand in June 2008 to represent Hong Kong and share mask theatre to local Thai arts community. The Far Away Tree, an original story told in Giant Pop-Up Book style, was commissioned by Time Warner for a school tour to promote English Literacy and Environmental Awareness. In fall 2008, All Theatre Art Association was commissioned by The Shanghai Fringe Festival to tour their show “Life, Love and Death” to promote Mask Theatre and appreciation of the theatre arts to youth in Shanghai.

In 2009, Hoi Chui has been played the role of director and actor for the shows, including Mongo: Dream Ten Degrees Higher performed at The City Festival in Hong Kong, MoMo JaJa, and The Hands of Time at International Art Carnival 2009.

海潮是本地的活躍演員，1993年開始遊走於香港各專業劇團，擁有豐富的藝術人生及多方面的藝術才能，身兼木偶師、演員、導演、舞者、工作坊導師及繪畫師。他亦嘗試探索不同的劇場種類，由祭祀劇場到以社區為主的一人一故事劇場。2002年他在日本的一人一故事劇場國際會議中教授及演出。他是香港木偶中心的創辦人之一，多年來不斷磨練木偶演出及製作的技巧。曾於香港演藝學院及香港青年藝術基金會教授木偶技藝。2008年於香港賽馬會創意藝術中心正式開設木人行 – 海潮工房面具木偶美術館。

海潮為人所認識的重要創作《盂蘭盆.祭》系列，是與藝術家黃世鈞合作的四年計劃，曾於香港、台灣及澳門演出。2002年獲邀到台灣參加國際藝術會議及藝術節。2003年創作《我變態你完全變態》，是次演出為前進進戲劇工作坊的演出系列之一及澳門藝穗節節目。
2004年他為得獎音樂劇《五行欠玩》擔任導演。該劇於香港國際綜藝合家歡首演，其後於加拿大多個城市的兒童藝術節中演出。加拿大巡迴期間，海潮與美姬．藍．奧海娜相識，並合組了「全劇場」，海潮任聯合藝術總監，並兼木偶師、佈景及道具設計、主要演員。

2005年他的原創木偶劇《我我你你》於英國伯明翰國際木偶節演出。同年，於澳門藝穗節演出《尋靜心之旅》，及原創木偶及舞蹈／劇場演出《浮世繪》。2005年夏天海潮於英國伯明翰國際木偶節演出《我我你你 ─ 一個愛情故事》。同年秋天為澳門藝穗節導演及演出《尋靜心之旅》，編舞與演出《浮世繪》。

2006年１月，他為中英劇場編寫現代版《西遊記》。同年春季全劇場獲嘉道理農場的邀請，建立首個木偶劇場「螢火蟲木偶劇場」及環保音樂木偶劇《從前有一棵樹》。海潮亦獲國際藝術節委約，設計及製作18隻巨型木偶及18隻杖頭木偶，於2006年11月在香港文化中心作開幕巡遊。

《我我你你 ─ 一個愛情故事》於第35屆香港藝術節、上海藝穗雙周「創意亞洲2007」及廣州木偶工作坊2008再次演出。2007年，他亦獲邀出席新加坡 Spotlight Festival 交流分享座談會。他亦為青少年藝術之友於40間中學演出原創木偶面具劇《時間之國》。

海潮於2008年獲泰國Patravadi劇團邀請於曼谷作《生　愛　死》面具演出及工作坊。其後作品更於上海藝穗節2008及韓國藝穗節2009演出。2008年，他亦獲「國際綜藝合家歡2008」委約，舉辦《夢世界》青少年多媒體工作坊及展覽。

踏入2009年，海潮積極參與創作不同劇場製作，擔任導演、演員、木偶師、佈景設計等不同的工作，包括《時間之手》國際綜藝合家歡 2009 面具木偶兒童音樂英文劇、《MoMo JaJa 瘋狂亂性小丑show》、《夢高十度》乙城節2009閉幕節目及《The Journey of Lotus 蓮花道》等。

Maggie Blue O’Hara 美姬．藍

Maggie Blue O’Hara is an actress, writer, dancer, singer and filmmaker with over 25 years’ experience in the Canadian theatre, television and film industry. Her many North American television guest appearances include X-Files, Cold Squad, The L Word and Da Vinci’s Inquest and she was a regular for four years on a CBC family series, Northwood.

Maggie is also one of Vancouver’s top voice artists. In addition to the role of Kitty Pryde on WB KIDS’ X-Men: Evolution, she provides character voices for many popular Japanese animation series such as Dragonball Z, Inuyasha, CardCaptors, Gundam Wing and Earth Maiden Arjuna.
After several years of dance training, Maggie Blue began choreographing original contemporary dance in Vancouver, British Columbia in 2000. Performing in BC, across Canada and down the west coast of North America at numerous music festivals and tribal gatherings, Maggie Blue’s innovative performances range from sensual and playful to spiritual and sacred.

In fall 2004, All Theatre Company premiered CHUN: Heaven Human Earth, a fire-dance production that Maggie Blue choreographed and directed, at the Macau Fringe Festival. While in Macau, she attended the World Arts Conference (W.A.C Fest), an international artists’ collaboration in which she directed and performed in numerous dance projects.

In summer 2005 Maggie Blue performed the puppet theatre production YuYu MiMi – A Love Story with her partner Hoi Chiu at the International Puppet Festival in Birmingham, England. In fall 2005 Maggie Blue and Hoi Chiu performed their shows Shambhala Warrior and Unity Consciousness Theory, which Maggie Blue wrote and directed, at the Macau Fringe Festival.

In summer 2006 Maggie Blue wrote and performed in The Far Away Tree, a musical puppet show about the importance of trees and our connection to nature. This show was commissioned by and performed at Hong Kong’s Kadoorie Farm.
Maggie Blue performed in All Theatre’s YuYu MiMi – A Love Story at the March 2007 Hong Kong Arts Festival. In 2008 All Theatre Company became All Theatre Art Association. Maggie Blue is focused on writing and choreographing new productions and creating her first solo album.

In January 2009, Maggie Blue wrote the lyrics and sang the theme song as well as played The Lover in MONGO: Dream Ten Degrees Higher at The Day Dream Walking Opening night Multi Media Art Exhbition. In March, she directed and co-choreographed the dance show The Journey of The Lotus. In May, she wrote and co-directed MoMo Jaja as well as played MoMo, in the sensual adult clown show. Maggie Blue is the playwrite for All Theatre’s next show: The hands of Time and also play Maid 12. Maggie Blue and Hoi Chiu will perform at The Seoul Fringe Festival in August and in September will attend the Hooyong Arts Centre in Korea for an Artist in Residency program.

美姬．藍是演員、作家、舞者、歌手、木偶師、編劇及電影人，在加拿大的劇場、電視及電影工業工作超過25年。她曾於多個電視節目中亮相，並連續四年參演加拿大廣播公司的家庭劇《Northwood》。她亦是加拿大的一級配音藝人，曾為《變種特攻》及《龍珠》等多部日本動畫配音。

2004年美姬．藍與海潮組成全劇場，為該團聯合藝術總監、聯合編劇、作曲及主要演員，現致力參與創作及製作有關所有「全劇場」的表演作品工作。同年，美姬．藍獲澳門藝穗節邀請演出《全：天、地、人》火舞／劇場演出（世界首演）。她亦曾參與國際藝術會議及藝術節製作及演出多個計劃。

All Theatre Art Association is an international multimedia production company founded in 2004 by co-artistic directors Hoi Chiu (Hong Kong) and Maggie Blue O’Hara (Vancouver).

“Our mission is to offer professional, quality productions that honour creativity, beauty and inspiration. We are dedicated to creating challenging and experimental performances by fusing storytelling with traditional and sacred theatre: movement, puppetry, masks, music, poetry, visual arts, video, and intentional design. We aspire to help spread the message of peace through artistic expression.”

Currently based in Hong Kong, ATAA has created original shows and toured internationally, with appearances in England, China, Macau, Singapore, Thailand and Canada. Workshops are held in conjunction with many of these shows, teaching puppetry, mask, story telling and performance arts, often with a focus on environmental awareness.

Maggie Blue and Hoi Chiu bring an astonishing array of talents to their collaboration: writing, producing and directing their ATAA shows and commissioned events; creating hand-made puppets and props; costume and set design; original music; choreography, and more. They are dedicated, full-time professional artists whose partnership in work and in life – they were married in 2006 – fuels their creativity and passion for their art.

Two very special recent additions to the All Theatre repertoire:

• Sand painting: Mesmerizing, lyrical, on-the-spot art created by Hoi Chiu and projected onto giant screens, inspired by the impermanence of Buddhist mandalas and the traditions of Chinese characters and zodiac symbols. Contemporary visuals to DJ music, or classical Chinese with musical duet of flute and gujung. A children/family performance with Maggie Blue story telling and Hoi Chiu sand painting is under development.

• Tribal Fusion: Bridging Cultures Through Dance – A hot new dance crew of international professional female performers blends belly dance, classical Indian dance, jazz, contemporary and theatre to take the audience on a sensuous journey.
